When The Wicked Beareth Rule
11/6/2011

In my lifetime, I can't recall a time when the people of America were so stirred up over government policies. Whether that "stirring up" manifests itself in righteous anger, grieving over the wickedness of a government that has become tyrannical or a sense of helplessness within the process, something new and dramatic is happening.

Clearly, something is happening in our once great country. On one hand, it's clear that wickedness is being forced upon a people that has been unwilling to accept it. There's a sense that government has now gone way too far. Perhaps a sense of decency is being wakened within the very same people who seemed oblivious to it for years. A people who seemed to openly embrace so much evil for so long has been pushed to a cliff that even they can now see. And that just might be a good thing.

Proverbs 29:2 states "When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn."

And mourning is exactly what we're seeing now in America. A people who were so self-absorbed for so long have been slowly waking up over the last few years to realize that what they had taken for granted is being pulled out from under them. Unfortunately, the problem is bigger than most people think.

It's not just the American "way of life" that's being usurped, it's the foundation of  that way of life that's being systematically removed by wicked rulers.

The source of the problem is that we as a people have forgotten God. We've rejected Him both publicly and privately. Please, don't get self-righteous and tell me that this doesn't apply to you because every last one of us is guilty to some extent. The church has been so busy "playing church" that she lost her First Love (revelation 2:4). We're so concerned about "filling the pews" that we've sacrificed the message. We've measured "church growth" by how many people are coming in on a Sunday rather than by how close the people are drawing near to Almighty God. And who's responsible for that?

The outrage in America MIGHT be a good thing if God's people will recognize what's really going on and respond appropriately. If we see this as an opportunity to preach the Gospel to people who may actually listen then some good may actually come of this anger. But if all we do is channel our anger at a wicked government through phone calls to legislators, etc. then ultimately we will have wasted what may be God's last opportunity for His people to BE His people.

I would encourage everyone to call his/her legislators and tell them what you think. Do all the things that we as Americans can do to change things. BUT, don't forget that first and foremost we're Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ and as such He expects something more from us. Don't forget His warning to His people in 2 Chronicles 7:13-15:

"[13] If I shut up heaven that there be no rain, or if I command the locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people; [14] If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. [15] Now mine eyes shall be open, and mine ears attent unto the prayer that is made in this place."

Notice what He says. When there's something wrong in the world around you it's up to His people to recognize their own responsibility and respond as He desires. He doesn't just talk about praying, He mentions that His people must turn from their "wicked ways" and seek His face. Then, in verse 15, he sets the plumb line for us: He's listening for our prayers. The question is, will He hear them?

That can only be answered by us. Will we cry out to Him or will we be so busy "doing other things" that we forget to do the one thing that can make a difference?

The choice is up to you.
